Barrie Cann
Technical Recruitment Consultant, Barnstaple
How long have you worked at Concept Staffing?
I have worked for Concept for over 14 years.
What attracted you to Concept?
I saw an advert in the local paper looking for someone who had worked in manufacturing, was organised, and able to work within a busy, fast moving environment. Previous roles as a production control manager and IT consultant gave me experience within the manufacturing sector and recruitment environment.
I was inspired at the thought of being able to find people work. I had just been made redundant, after 23 years’ with the same firm, and therefore could empathise with many job-seekers.
What do you like about working for Concept?
Concept is a great place to work – it’s a very much a work hard; play hard environment. No two days are ever the same. We have a very strong support network throughout our branches, which I love to be part of. Having been with the company for so many years I am known as the ‘engineering guru’ and really enjoy showing colleagues what I have learnt over time.
Concept encourages personal success with competitions and league tables throughout the Group – it’s friendly competition between Concept and Acorn (Concept’s parent company) branches and certainly adds flare to our working day.
What makes Concept different from other organisations you have worked for?
Concept, being part of the Acorn Group, can provide recruitment services across the UK however still remains the leading local provider across the South West.
We’re known for understanding the sectors we work in, I’m therefore proud to sell the service we offer.
What has been your best / most successful moment at Concept?
Recruitment is so unpredictable and it’s therefore a great feeling to match the right person to a suitable company – I get a buzz everytime.
I’ve been successful in a number of Concept competitions, winning a trip to Rome and Iceland which have been particular highlights.
What advice would you give others looking at recruitment as a possible career?
Do it! Be prepared for the fact it won’t go smoothly, be resilient enough to take the disappointments, and enjoy success when everything goes to plan. After 14 years, I still love it.
